Allen’s works are akin to second glances. They provide for us the opportunity to ponder the importance or implications of the relationships in the commonplace. He observes all aspects of his daily routine, whether that be from the intimacies of his home, the open landscape, or all that is between. Though the works are fixed moments, they are developed as a collective of many observations that co-exist as one. While painting and drawing these observations (both directly and remembered), he creates a sense of time and place as a memory is seen in the mind’s eye.
Michael Allen uses a variety of medium to present his work. Just as oil takes no hierarchy over conte crayon or graphite with ink wash, panels and canvas share equal importance with laid paper – floated or mounted to panel. It is the observation that dictates.
