Lou Schellenberg

Lou Schellenberg is a visual artist who divides her year painting in Pennsylvania, and Nova Scotia, Canada. Lou was raised in NY and New England and has a deep connection to the northeast coast. Living both rural and city experiences has influenced her life and work. As a child Lou knew she wanted to be an artist but also knew that being outside in nature was critical to her life. Her work as a landscape painter has been a fusion of these passions: painting, and the outdoors.

For over thirty years Schellenberg’s landscape paintings have combined observation and invention, creating paired down compositions of dwellings and structures in her surroundings. After receiving an MFA she relocated to PA where she taught for 20 years. Over her long career Schellenberg has exhibited in numerous group and solo shows the US and Canada. Her work has been included in exhibits at The Lancaster Museum of Art, The Susquehanna Art Museum, The Demuth Museum, The Woodmere Museum, The State Museum of PA, Albany Institute of History and Art NY, The Fitchburg art Museum MA, and in college and university galleries. Her paintings and public commissions are in many collections and several countries outside the US. Schellenberg has won many awards including a Massachusetts Artist Foundation Individual Fellowship, and a first place in the Art of the State Exhibition, Pennsylvania.

Lou lives with her husband, an artist and professional framer in Lancaster County Pennsylvania.

From the Artist

“I paint landscapes from observation, responding to the juxtapositions between nature and human built structures. The urgency of painting with oils outdoors necessitates a quick response between my vantage point and the painting’s surface, moving between representation and abstraction. Depicting paired down simplified dwellings, land, and water, I emphasize color relationships and spatial tensions seeking a visual narrative that is as insistent as the subject.”
