Eva Bender

My main medium is watercolor. I work in a realistic manner, starting with a real subject matter and a drawing, then moving towards the abstract and mysterious. I start working with the paper very wet, adding layers of paint as the paper dries. I am open to accidents and surprises, enjoying the lack of control involved in working this way. I usually paint “on the spot”, at home or outside, finishing the work almost entirely in one sitting.

I am “self-taught”, which to me means without much formal art school training. I have learned from my mother, from growing up in a very art and design oriented society. I have learned from other artists, from my children, from everything around me, Art is what I do. I can’t imagine not drawing and painting. It gives me a language, a way to express what I experience. Art deepens and clarifies, sometimes even saves your life.
