Working from memory and observation, Frey’s painting process is driven by formal concerns, dominated with compositional organization and structure. She searches for unexpected connections – through color, form, etc. – coaxing them along as she builds her paintings. Frey’s process involves finding and composing the abstraction in observation, sharing with viewers a subtly distorted sense of space. With invented color and viewpoints, Frey exaggerates both the color relationships and the visual experience while still allowing viewers to sense something familiar and relatable in her work. She finds abstraction in the observed space through hidden pathways. For Frey, these are easy to see, swirling your eye through the composition and urging the viewer to look more closely.
